Why Manchester United loanee Amad isn’t playing for Rangers

It’s almost two months since Amad left Manchester United on loan to sign for Rangers for the rest of the season.

While there had been interest in Amad from European and Championship sides across the January window, Rangers landed the teenager in what seemed like quite the coup for the Scottish club. United were keen for Amad to continue his development in British football and the move to Rangers promised first-team minutes at senior level, but the loan has not yet gone to plan.

Amad scored within five minutes of his debut for Rangers and the move immediately seemed like a masterstroke. Rangers fans quickly created a chant for the youngster to the tune of ABBA song Voulez-Vous but that song has not been heard since.

Amad has played just 220 minutes across six appearances in just under two months and he’s fallen out of contention.

Rangers are fighting for the Scottish Premiership, they’re currently three points behind Celtic, and Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst does not seem to trust Amad as the season reaches the business end and the pressure intensifies.

In the last update Van Bronckhorst gave on Amad, he suggested the forward was still adapting to the demands of Scottish football.

“He had a good start. You also know the change in environment for him is an aspect that he feels,” Bronckhorst said.

“Also the level of playing now. He played a couple of games with United but only in the reserves so the intensity that he will be feeling in Scotland is much higher.”

United were keen for Amad to gain experience at Rangers but the loan isn’t working out. United invested £37m in Amad when signing him from Atalanta last year and it’s believed another loan move for the youngster next season is likely.

Feyenoord wanted Amad on loan in the summer and the chances of a return to Rangers on loan seem very slim.
