Why Erling Haaland pursuit is a waste of time for Ralf Rangnick and Manchester United – Omar Garrick

Manchester United need to address some of their squad issues in the transfer market because there’s too much noise coming from inside the training camp.

Multiple reports have indicated that there’s dressing room discontent with some of the current United players, most likely those who aren’t getting any game time under Ralf Rangnick.

Rangnick was asked about some of these problems at his pre-match news conference for the FA Cup third-round tie against Aston Villa match.

He confirmed that if the players don’t deal with issues in a professional way, then they are welcome to ply their trades elsewhere.

“It’s about the players dealing with that situation in a professional way,” Rangnick said. “Everybody has the chance to show in training, to show up and get the chance to play. If this is not the case then, of course, the player, club and agents need to discuss the situation.

“As far as I can tell, so far the players have been dealing with that in a professional way. I cannot say anything else. If I realise that is not the case I will address that with the players direct.”

However, there are also players who want to leave the club who haven’t kicked up a fuss to the media or thrown their toys out of the pram.

One player who wants to leave but will remain professional is Edinson Cavani. His contract runs out in June and United will be tasked with finding a replacement for him.

At one point, it felt like the perfect candidate had been identified, as Rangnick was reportedly interested in bringing Borussia Dortmund sensation, Erling Haaland to Old Trafford.

The MEN reported in December that Rangnick had contacted Haaland’s father, Alf-Inge, about the possibility of his son signing for United in the summer of 2022.

However, the latest reports this weekend suggest Haaland has already picked his preferred destination.

It feels like it’s a race between Manchester City and Real Madrid for Haaland’s signature, which means that United won’t be getting him anytime soon.

This may be disappointing but there’s absolutely no point getting worked up over it for many reasons.

First of all, if United signed Haaland when he wanted to play for another club, that would just be a similar mistake to ones made in the recent past.

There have been too many times since Sir Alex Ferguson retired that United have signed high-quality recruits who only came for a payday and were not motivated by a desire play for the badge (we’re looking at you, Angel di Maria and Alexis Sanchez).

Secondly, there are other striking options that United could pursue instead of Haaland, almost all of them far cheaper when you factor in the agents fee Mino Raiola will demand.

Dusan Vlahovic is the name that continues popping up as the latest Haaland alternative, and if we’re going off his stats this season in Serie A, he could probably do a job as good, if not better, than the Norwegian. He has 16 goals and two assists in 19 league matches so far this season – some going for a 21-year-old in a usually mid-table Fiorentina team!

While it’s a long-shot, there’s also the situation with Harry Kane, who’s always been admired by United, but whether he now stays at Tottenham under Antonio Conte, remains to be seen.

For now, United and Rangnick shouldn’t waste their time with Haaland. Of course, there’s no doubt he’s absolutely sensational and it would be a different story if he wanted to join. But all the indications are that he doesn’t.

We should move on because there are still plenty of quality players who would give anything to play for Manchester United.
