Prepare to bid farewell to Hawkins, Indiana. Netflix announced on Thursday that Stranger Things will end with its fifth and final season. In an open letter to fans, shared by the streamer, show creators Matt and Ross Duffer confirmed that the forthcoming fourth season would mark “the beginning of the end.”
It’s been more than two years since a new season of Stranger Things was released, but the fourth will account for this gap, as “it’s bigger than ever,” the Duffers teased. “With nine scripts, over eight-hundred pages, almost two years of filming, thousands of visual effects shots, and a runtime nearly twice the length of any previous season, Stranger Things 4 was the most challenging season yet, but also the most rewarding one,” they said in the letter.
Given the supersized length, Stranger Things’ fourth season will be released in two volumes—Volume One on May 27th, and Volume Two on July 1st. That allows fans five weeks to process the first half before receiving the second. The Duffers then confirmed that following filming of the fourth season, they are “hurtling toward our finale” and that season 5 will be the show’s last.
In parting words to viewers of the Emmy-winning series, which premiered in 2016, the Duffers hinted at “new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes” in the future. They added, “But first we hope that you stay with us as we finish this tale of a powerful girl named Eleven and her brave friends, of a broken police chief and a precious mom, of a small town called Hawkins and an alternate dimension known only as the Upside Down.”
