Nicolas Cage and his fifth wife, Riko Shibata, announced on Thursday that they are expected their first child together.
A representative confirmed the happy news to People, telling the outlet, “The parents-to-be are elated!” This will be Shibata’s first child and Cage’s third as he is already a father to 31-year-old Weston and 16-year-old Kal-El from his previous relationships with actress Christina Fulton and Alice Kim, respectively.
The couple tied the knot at a very small, intimate ceremony held at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas on February 16 of last year, a date chosen to commemorate Cage’s late father’s birthday. The pair first met in Shiga, Japan through mutual friends over a year prior. Shibata wore a handmade Japanese bridal kimono from Kyoto for the wedding, walking down the aisle to her favorite song, “Winter Song” By Kiroro. The Oscar winner wore a Tom Ford tuxedo, and the pair exchanged traditional Catholic and Shinto vows, as well as reading a Walt Whitman poem and a haiku. In a statement to People at the time, Cage said, “It’s true, and we are very happy.”
Cage and Shibata made their red carpet debut as a couple last July at the premiere of his film Pig before posing for their first cover together for Flaunt magazine in October.
