Mpumalanga Community safety MEC ‘shocked’ by traffic officer’s killing

Mpumalanga’s MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe, has sent condolences to the family of a traffic officer, who was fatally shot in Saselani Trust near Bushbuckridge.

The man, 35-year-old Thabo Mashego was shot in what is a believed to have been a car hijacking. According to local police, Mashego was driving his car accompanied by two of his friends, when two armed shot emerged from the side of the road and started firing at the car. Mashego was injured and dragged out of the vehicle by the suspects with his friends. The suspects then fled the scene.

They managed to find help from a motorists who transported Mashego to hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.


Reacting to the slain traffic officer’s death, Vusi Shongwe expressed his shock at the incident. which he has described as callous and called on Mpumalanga SAPS to spare no effort to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“Our police should not rest until the perpetrators are behind bars. We are also appealing to our communities who may have any information regarding the case to come forward and assist the police,”

Meanwhile, police have opened a case of hijacking with an additional charge of murder and a manhunt was launched for the suspects in Mashego’s killing.

“Members of the public are urged to come forth with information that may assist in apprehending the perpetrators by calling the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or send information via MYSAPSAPP. All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous,” SAPS Mpumalanga said at the time.
