Ed Sheeran’s Neighbors Have Grave Misgivings

Though only 31 and giving every indication of being in good health, British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran is preparing for the day he shuffles off this mortal coil. At his 16-acre estate in Framlingham, nicknamed “Sheeranville,” the successful recording artist had already won council approval to build a chapel, described as “a private place of retreat for contemplation and prayer.” Last month, he put in an application to include a private crypt beneath the structure.

The Daily Mail reported that the request has been granted, though other outlets say there are still lingering formalities. If allowed, the crypt will be 9 ft by 6 ft, and accessed via a stone slab. Sheeran, currently married to 29-year-old Cherry Seaborn, has not indicated just how many people he intends to put down there when the time comes.

The performer’s neighbors, however, are less-than-thrilled by the latest development, as reported by The New York Post.

“Are celebrities now so detached from reality that their every living breath and now even the act of dying be apart from the rest of us?” an area resident named Anna Woods is said to have asked. She further grumbled that “the area is well-served by local churches,” while wondering why the singer needed “his own island of calm when lovely places of worship abound in the area.”

Raised eyebrows aside, there are no laws on the books preventing burials on private lands in England and Wales.

Should the crypt plans go through, it and the chapel with stained-glass windows and a spiral-stair tower will join other amenities at Sheeran’s estate, like a pub, gym, and wildlife pond. That wildlife pond, however, has faced accusations of being a glorified swimming pool by neighbors in 2019.
