Christian Carino’s lengthy pre-taped deposition on Wednesday during the third week of Johnny Depp’s defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard offered a window into Heard and Elon Musk’s short-lived relationship. After Heard and Depp filed for divorce and she had taken out a temporary restraining order against him, Heard asked Carino, her former friend and commercial agent, to arrange a meeting in San Francisco between Heard and her estranged spouse. The purpose, according to Carino’s understanding, was for Heard to reconcile with Depp (Carino also served briefly as Depp’s agent, and was able to discuss why he thought Depp lost his role in Pirates of the Caribbean 6; “My opinion is it was related to the accusations that Amber has made,” he said).
Soon after the former couple met up, according to Carino, she started dating Musk. It sounds like all involved knew Musk was a rebound situation.
In text messages “dated August of 2017,” according to the evidence read in the deposition, Heard tells Carino, “‘Dealing with breakup. Hate when things go public. See I’m so sad.’”
“I believe she’s referring to breaking up with Elon,” Carino confirmed.
“‘Seems like a press release,’” he responded in text. “‘You weren’t in love with him. And you told me a thousand times you were just filling space.’”
“I’m saying, why would you be sad if you weren’t in love with him to begin with,” Carino clarified.
In response, Heard texted, “‘I know, but I wanted time to grieve and recover in my own time,’” but Carino was unable to confirm whether she was talking about Musk or Depp.
Carino said he doesn’t believe that Heard and Depp had a relationship during this text message exchange, before more texts are read. “‘And you got that, no?’” he wrote at the time. To which she responds, “‘I hate that yet again a man lets me fall on the spikes by myself,’” adding, “‘Meaning, they are mad at me for leaving them and put things like this out there.’”
“‘You could avoid all this if you stop dating über-famous people. You can be with a big man who isn’t famous,’” Carino responded.
Musk and Heard dated for a brief time beginning in the summer after she filed for divorce. During the U.K. case, Depp reportedly hadn’t “ruled out” serving model Cara Delevingne a subpoena to testify about a supposed threesome with Musk and Heard (Musk eventually told Page Six, “Cara and I are friends, but we’ve never been intimate. She would confirm this.”) Musk is on the approved witness list for this current lawsuit as well; it seems unlikely that he will at this point. Musk is a big man who’s got a new business to run.
